The newly launched, Balance Holidays ( www.balanceholidays.com ) is pleased to be partnering with Marie Yagami and introducing Jiriki yoga to Europe for the first time. Jiriki was originally started in 1993 by Yu Yagami, an acupuncture, chiropractor, yoga practitioner and instructor in Japan. His daughter, Marie, is the only English speaking practitioner of Jiriki, and Balance Holidays is for the first time, offering the opportunity to learn this restorative practise at the Grounding Retreat at historical manor farm, Commenda di San Calogero Sicily in April 2019.
On the four day Sicilian wellness retreat, at the stunning Commenda di San Calogero, each day will end with a session of Jiriki in the light of the luminous setting sun led by Marie Yagami. Jiriki, the Japanese Buddhist term for self-power, is movement therapy aimed at preventing and curing chronic disorder and pain. The practice of jiriki reinstates the free-flowing of Chi through the body and learning to listen to the body to find pains, imbalance, misalignments and tension, to improve the body’s natural power of healing. The evening sessions of Jiriki will relax the mind and help the body heal before a sound nights sleep in one of the luxurious suites.
The practise of Jiriki movement therapy, founded by Yu Yagami, came about when Yu found that in order to solve the fundamental issues of chronic disease, pain and discomfort of his patients, the patients needed to work on their body awareness and lifestyles, and to believe in their natural healing ability. Yu started to train to become a yoga instructor in an ashram in Gifu, Japan, and taught for nearly 10 years. Eventually, he developed the practice of Jiriki which merges all of his past practices of a chiropractor, acupuncture therapist, and yoga instructor into one healing movement. Jiriki is designed for practitioners to apply therapists’ techniques to themselves in order to treat their own chronic disorders without outside help. Yoga movements, which also help to mitigate chronic disorder by taking various body postures, have also inspired Jiriki. Jiriki is not only for younger, more flexible people, but for everybody - from the elderly to young children and even expectant mothers.
Marie Yagami says “I am very excited about this opportunity. This retreat will enable me to work closely with clients and work to their needs. You can feel the benefits of the Jiriki practice after just one session, and immediately you start to feel better. However, as chronic pains develop over many days and years, healing also takes time. Therefore, this four day retreat will be a great start to experience healing through the practice of Jiriki, and guests can take the skills they have learnt away with them and continue the exercise at home. I will help clients to understand their own body, visualising their body condition and work on meditation to tune in with their body and mind.
From that point, we will apply Jiriki practice. Jiriki has been developed over 35 years from Yoga, acupuncture, and chiropractic treatments and there are over 300 different moves.” B
Born to yoga teacher parents in a yoga Ashram in Japan, Marie Yagami is daughter to the creator of Jiriki Seitai, a self-healing body movement, which combines Yoga, Shiatsu Massage and Chiropractic treatment. Now as an accomplished Jiriki Seitai teacher, a Vinyasa Flow Yoga Teacher and a Performance designer, Marie’s Jiriki movement classes focus on body and mind awareness, creativity, breathing and healing. Each class teaches and encourages students to be confident in confronting their innate ability to be able to heal body, mind and soul independently.
During her early 20s, Marie was restricted by the fast-tempo city life of a designer and director of Performing Arts in New York City and London. To cope, Marie discovered Yoga and Jiriki and after sharing this coping tool with colleagues, friends and other students in her class, she soon came to realise her mission in life was to share the method of Jiriki Seitai, developed and run by her family in Japan. She realised the importance of learning to listen to and understand our bodies with regards to physical and mental illnesses or simply staying healthy rather than depending on therapists, nutritionists and doctors. After completing an RYS 250-hour Vinyasa Flow YTT at Stretch London, Marie has deepened her knowledge on philosophy, anatomy, pranayama and meditation and has since applied these vital components into her Jiriki teaching. With renewed and humble ardour, Marie continues to learn different concepts and philosophies of body, mind, health and wellbeing through other yoga anatomy teachers, dance teachers and most
importantly, from her father. This, combined with her knowledge of Eastern and Western Medicine enables Marie to educate her students and others who are seeking an antidote to modern life. The main objective of Marie’s Jiriki classes is to reconnect with our bodies, and heal them by learning to listen for chronic pains, imbalance, misalignments and tension. Through her detailed guidance, students are able to find a personal relationship with their body and learn how to treat themselves unaided in the absence of a therapist or medical professional. In addition, students can learn to let go, to relax the body and release tension from the joints and muscles, discover acupuncture points for self-massage, realign the spine using props and exercise inner and core muscles to heal the body thoroughly, inside and out. Students will be immersed in an eye-opening experience with Marie’s Jiriki Seitai practice, the first teacher to bring forward this body healing methodology to Europe straight from Japan.
